Finding Your Voice in Mixed Media, with Deborah Maklowski
Ellicott City artist Deborah Maklowski works in a variety of genres, including impressionist Plein air landscapes in pastel and acrylic, representational drawings in colored pencil, graphite, and ink, and abstracts in colored pencil, acrylic, and collage. Deborah studied drawing and painting with private instructors from the age of 9 through high school and continued her training in college while majoring in Art History. She maintains her professional development through workshops with nationally known instructors, networking with her fellow artists, and a focused studio and Plein air practice. She is a dual signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, a past president and signature member of the Maryland Pastel Society, a juried member of the Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington D.C., and a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association. Her award-winning work has been juried into numerous national and regional exhibitions and Plein air competitions and is included in private collections across the U.S.

Paint: Bring the following Golden Fluid (Make sure it says “FLUID”!) Acrylics, in 1 oz bottles:
• Titanium White
• Ultramarine Blue
• Quanacridone Magenta
• Primary Yellow
Tools/equipment:
An assortment of brushes: Synthetic bristles are best for acrylics, and short-handle brushes will be easier to use in class. They don’t have to be expensive. Include at least:
o 1 small round (#1 or #2) for linear work
o 1 flat ¼” (around 6.35 mm) wide
o 1 flat ½” (around 12.7mm) wide
• Plastic palette knives and painting knives (two or three will be fine)
• A water container
• Paper towels
• Q-Tips
• 9”x12” pad of palette paper (Gray Matters recommended)
• Small craft knife (e.g., Slice, Excel, Maped, etc.)
• Scissors
• 2 old bath-size towels
Collage materials: Your choice! These are just suggestions, and you don’t need to bring all of this. Just choose a few SMALL items, whatever you have, whatever interests you. We’ll be working on three small (5”x7”) panels, one magenta-themed, one blue-themed, and one yellow-themed, if that helps you decide.
