Emotions play a powerful role at work and in personal lives. In this interactive and practical workshop, part one of a series of workshops on developing emotional intelligence, Dr. David Caruso will cover these topics: What is emotional intelligence? Why does emotional intelligence matter? Developing your emotional intelligence skills. Applying your emotional intelligence skills in situations such as resolving conflicts and handling feedback in the workplace as a leader.

Dr. David R. Caruso is a research affiliate at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, Senior Advisor to the Dean of Yale College and the co-founder of Emotional Intelligence (EI) Skills Group. David is the co-author of the Mayer, Salovey, Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT), together with psychologists John Meyer and Yale president Peter Salovey, and has provided feedback to thousands of executives. He and colleague Peter Salovey wrote the “how-to” book, The Emotionally Intelligent Manager. He is a co-author (with Lisa Rees, a leadership and emotional intelligence coach) of The Leader’s Guide to Solving Challenges with Emotional Intelligence. David has published numerous articles – peer-reviewed journal articles, reviews and chapters - on the topics of emotional intelligence and leadership.

He will provide trainings on each of the four emotional intelligence abilities: perceive how you and others feel, use these feelings to assist with the tasks at hand, understand how these feelings arose and how they will change, and manage these feelings effectively to achieve a positive outcome. You will do guided exercises in this workshop include: reading people; expressing emotions; use of emotional storytelling to develop relationships and cultivate emotional empathy; matching moods to tasks; effective emotion management strategies. Winners of a lucky draw among the attendees will receive books co-authored by Dr. Caruso which cover strategies for developing emotional intelligence in detail. What skills do leaders and managers need to succeed? They need to be smart and they need superb technical skills. But beyond analytical intelligence and technical skills, leaders and managers need other skills to better lead people, communicate effectively, adapt to different cultures, read people, and handle stressful situations. It is an effective leader who can accurately perceive how you and others feel, use these feelings to assist with the task at hand, understand how these feelings arose and how they will change, and then manage these feelings effectively to achieve a positive outcome.
