The in-person option is only open to CCA students. Andrew McLuhan will not be present on campus, he will conduct the lecture as a Zoom Webinar. CCA students will have the option to watch the webinar in the Nave Presentation Area of the main building.

In our time, cause and effect don't have the easy relationship they once did. It's a lot less clear now where one starts and another ends. Design is a bridge between cause and effect. Design makes the difference between ease and anxiety.

Marshall McLuhan spent his whole career studying effect. Effect in literature, in poetry; and effect in technology and culture. Ever keen to discover the nature of these matters, he developed new ways of approaching them, in a relentless pursuit of understanding. One of his primary concerns was waking people up to the effects of our innovations; for the public, that we would realize what's being done to us, for the creators, that they realize the power they hold and design smarter.

In this presentation, we will look at the life and work of Marshall McLuhan and how he came to study technology and culture, discuss some of his methods and insights, and answer part of the question 'what does design do?'

Speaker Bio

Andrew McLuhan is a writer ('written matter,' Revelore Press 2021) and researcher based in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. Son of Eric McLuhan and a grandson of Marshall McLuhan, he formed The McLuhan Institute in 2017 to preserve and continue McLuhan work in exploring the effects of technology on people and societies.
