Beginner Sewing Camp: How to use your sewing machine

Description

Have you watched all of the beginner sewing youtube videos and still feel lost? If you’ve always wanted to learn to sew but feel overwhelmed by your machine or, just need a little hands on guidance to move forward then this class is for you! Come join textile artist Paige St-Pierre and learn all that your machine has to offer plus tips and tricks for frustration free sewing so you can actually enjoy the process of making!

No prior sewing machine knowledge is necessary but all participants must bring their own machine in good working order including the machine’s manual. If your machine is broken or needs maintenance, please have that done before coming to class. We won’t have time to troubleshoot a broken machine.

When you leave this class you will be able to:

  • Identify all the machine parts and accessories and know the function for each
  • Thread the needle and bobbin
  • Use your machine’s function to wind the bobbin
  • Identify correct thread tension and how to change it depending on the project
  • Identify and mark seam allowance guides on your machine’s throat plate
  • Practice sewing the straight stitch forwards and backwards to begin and end a seam
  • Identify and experiment with stitch width and length for various decorative stitches

Materials & Equipment: For this class, you will bring own sewing machine in good working order, your machine's manual, sewing machine thread, scissors, and any 100% cotton scraps you have to practice on. All other materials will be provided. For your personal safety, please wear closed-toe shoes, tie long hair back, and avoid any dangling jewelry or baggy clothing.
