Join us for a book launch and signing event featuring artist Andres Serrano (The Game: All Things Trump), and art critic/curator Andy Grundberg (How Photography Became Contemporary Art: Inside an Artistic Revolution from Pop to the Digital Age.) The launch and signing will go from 4-5:30pm. Books can be purchased on site or brought from home, if purchased previously.

This event is connected to the screening of Andres Serrano's first-ever film, Insurrection, which is playing at CulturalDC's Source Theatre January 7, 8, 13, 14, 15. Attendees are encouraged to attend.

Andres Serrano was born in 1950 in New York City. He attended the Brooklyn Museum Art School from 1967 to 1969, where he studied painting and sculpture. Andres Serrano’s name, along with Robert Mapplethorpe’s, was at the crossroads of the 1989 Cultural Wars when Serrano’s photograph, ‘Piss Christ’ became the subject of a national debate on freedom of artistic expression and the public funding of controversial art. Andres Serrano is an internationally acclaimed American artist whose work has been shown in major institutions in the United States and abroad. His photographs are in numerous museums and public collections.

Andy Grundberg was the photography critic of the New York Times from 1981 to 1991. He later served as the director of the Ansel Adams Center for Photography in San Francisco and as chair of the photography department and dean of the Corcoran College of Art and Design. When Andy Grundberg landed in New York in the early 1970s as a budding writer, photography was at the margins of the contemporary art world. By 1991, when he left his post as critic for the New York Times, photography was at the vital center of artistic debate. Grundberg writes eloquently and authoritatively about photography’s “boom years,” chronicling the medium’s increasing role within the most important art movements of the time, from Earth Art and Conceptual Art to performance and video. He also traces photography’s embrace by museums and galleries, as well as its politicization in the culture wars of the 80s and 90s.

a/political explores radical knowledge through the principle of Cultural Terror. Working with artists and agitators, the collective platforms voices that undermine the dominant narratives of our time. a/political exists outside the commercial art world, functioning through interventions, commissions and a collection of contemporary art.

In recent projects, a/political has faced aspiring authoritarian rulers; demonstrated ways our bodies are supervised and controlled (We Protect You from Yourselves by Democracia); analysed the mechanisms of censorship (Young Blood by Andrei Molodkin) and propaganda (Forward by Erik Bulatov).
