BROAD STREET STROLL: Winter Downtown Hike

Perfect for Individuals, Families, and Groups. Well-behaved pets welcome to join!

Our leaders will guide you in an urban hike and a new way of seeing winter in Newark using their skills and knowledge. There will be warming mindful movement, standing meditations, winter blessings, and new friends.

Hike Leaders: Kazi & Keyana | Time: 10:30am to 12:00pm (approx. end) | Distance: 1.5 mi. | Difficulty: Easy | Fee: Free | Age: For all ages who can walk the distance (youths under 17 must be accompanied by adult).

Route: This hike will begin at Mulberry Commons and from there we’ll walk to Broad Street. We’ll then walk north on Broad to Military Park for a stop. If any folks haven’t been to the Center we’ll make a short stop there (Masks required on; restroom available). We’ll then continue on along Broad Street, through Washington Park and end at Broad Street Station.

Covid Guidelines: We suggest that you opt in or out of wearing masks or face coverings and respectfully keep your distance from those you don’t know.

Suggestions: Bring water, snack, and hand sanitizer. Dress in layers.

Leader Bio-note:

Ib’nallah S. Kazi is a New York-based spiritual wilderness guide, born in Panama and raised in New York. He graduated from Adelphi University, in 1981 with a BA in Psychology. Following careers in human services, public education and public health in the New York City area, he then placed an emphasis on wellness and spiritual cultivation through his own program, presently known as Our Shaman Song. Along with his friend and hiking partner Sala Nolan, Kazi founded the Harriet Tubman Hiking Society in 1988 to expose the African-American community to the strengthening, healing and spiritually grounding benefits of immersion in nature. Kazi lived in Newark, NJ from 2004-2017. He is the Spiritual Director and Lead Meditation Medicine teacher with NCMC.

Keyana Jones has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Montclair State University and a Masters in Corporate & Organizational Communication from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is currently a NJ state employee by day, but considers herself to be a superhero by night, since it is her extracurricular activities that fuel her spirit. She began leading group hikes in April 2015 and soon after launched her brainchild: HIKEOLUTION, a company geared towards bringing a lifestyle of hiking into practice for all. She is a board member of the Sisters Helping Sisters in Christ (SHSIC) Ministry and Carolyn Dorfman Dance. She is a Board Member and a Mindful Hike Leader with NCMC.
