Elder Abuse & Mandated Reporting

Emily Berrill, MSW

1 CE approved by NASW ME. Free for NASW Members, $25 for not-yet-members

Elder abuse is an uncomfortable topic that many shy away from discussing. Because of this silence, older adults who experience abuse are stigmatized, disconnected from the community, and left without support. Just because we don’t hear about elder abuse does not mean that it is not prevalent in our communities.

Join us as we break the silence and learn about what elder abuse is, how to provide folks with the necessary resources, and why supported decision-making is essential to healing. This webinar will be helpful for any mandated reporter in Maine.

About the presenter:

Emily Berrill, MSW is the Transitional Housing Program Coordinator for Martha’s Cottage, a program of the Elder Abuse Institute of Maine (EAIME). Emily works with older adults who are in need of transitional housing as a result of abuse, sexual assault, and/or stalking. She also leads EAIME outreach efforts to educate Maine communities about Martha’s Cottage and create and sustain partnerships to expand the resource connections for clients. Prior to becoming Program Coordinator, Emily was one of Maine’s first Advocates for EAIME’s Elder Service Connections program, where she provided support to clients experiencing or at risk of experiencing elder abuse. Elder Services Connections began as an intervention research project in partnership with Maine Adult Protective Services. This project developed a model intervention, called RISE, to assist individuals experiencing elder mistreatment and address gaps in services for older victims. It represents one of the largest pieces of APS intervention research to date. With funding from Maine Adult Protective Services in July of 2021, EAIME was able to continue and expand this model across all counties in Maine starting in July 2021. Emily graduated from the University of Maine’s School of Social Work in 2019 with her MSW. Along with elder abuse, she has a background in intergenerational programming and legislative advocacy in Maine. In her free time, Emily enjoys crocheting and snuggling with her two cats!
