From Memory to the Senses: Celebrating a Decade of Discovery

Description

How do you differentiate between pain and pleasure? How do you recognize thousands of odors wafting in the air? How does your brain make sense of what your eyes see? How can the brain record a lifetime of memories? This a small sampling of the questions hundreds of researchers are embracing at Columbia’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute. Discovering how the brain works is among the most fascinating and consequential mandates of our time, and the Zuckerman Institute research community is taking it on.

On October 25, please  join us as University Professor and Nobel laureate Richard Axel, MD, leads a discussion with three Principal Investigators whose work showcases how the Zuckerman Institute is opening new windows into what make us, us:

  • Ishmail Abdus-Saboor, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, is rethinking how pain is measured
  • Dmitriy Aronov, PhD, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, is exploring the outstanding memories of chickadees
  • Rudy Behnia, PhD, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, is providing new insights in the nature of vision

This year marks ten years since Mort Zuckerman announced his bold and transformational commitment to endow the Zuckerman Institute. We invite you to join this discussion marking a decade of discovery. Introductory remarks will be given by Columbia University President, Lee C. Bollinger.
