Getting Started “Doing” Philosophy with Children - A Public Talk and Dinner at Hanahau'oli School

Time: 5:30-7:30 PM HST

Location: Hanahau'oli School, 1922 Makiki Street, Honolulu HI 96822

Cost: $25

Philosophy for Children (P4C) is an international movement that aims to convert traditional classrooms into intellectually safe democratic communities of inquiry by engaging students and teachers in the activity of philosophy. Referred to as a "gently Socratic" (Jackson, 2001) approach to philosophical inquiry, P4C practitioners use a number of strategies to support students in developing their ability to think for themselves and learning how to use this ability in compassionate, responsible ways. Come to this event to learn how to get started with doing P4C.

Facilitated by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education, the event will feature a diverse panel of philosophy for children Hawai‘i (p4cHI) scholars and practitioners. This will include an early childhood educator, two elementary teachers, two high school teachers, and practitioners who lead p4cHI inquiries in community settings. To expand on both theoretical and practical aspects of p4cHI, each panelist will describe: (1) their context, (2) what their guiding vision is for beginning p4cHI in their classroom or community context, (3) and examples of specific p4cHI strategies they find effective.

This will be an in-person event and will include a light dinner in the registration fee.

This event is offered in collaboration with philosophy for children Hawai'i's 2022 Hybrid Symposium. Symposium participants attend this public talk at no additional cost and need not register. To learn more and register for the complete series of Symposium events click here.
