The Church in North America faces challenges the Church in Europe faced a generation ago. The Church in Europe faces challenges we will face a generation from now.
WHY AMERICA NEEDS TO FOLLOW
Despite tectonic philosophical, moral, and demographic changes over the last 50 years, much of the North American Church, especially in the United States, still struggles to frame its mission without latent assumptions about its historic place in the culture and prevailing paradigms of success and influence that we imagine the Church should realize. The result is that our ministry often lacks self-awareness and burdens leaders and members with discouragement. The Church then either retracts from the culture, attacks it, or accommodates it. These factors also disrupt church unity by fostering isolation and competition among churches.
While every church deals with problems brought on by the world and of their own making, our European brothers and sisters don’t bring the same kind of baggage to the mission. They can help us see ourselves more clearly by giving us a look into our cultural and missional future. With their help, we can think more clearly and learn to collaborate more effectively in our gospel witness here in North America.
