Grandma's House feat. Rise

Description

Join us at The Joinery on July 14th at 7:00 (doors at 6:50) for another round of Grandma’s House- Chicago's coziest poetry show! Come to share your poetry, watch our featured poet, and build community. Whether you are an experienced poet, first time reader, or just want to listen, you are welcome at Grandma’s House!

THE OPEN MIC AND OVERFLOW LISTS ARE NOW FULL

You can sign up for an open mic slot at the Sign Up Genius link when you reserve your seat. Please reserve your seat before you sign up to insure that you’re able to attend. Due to the early access for first time readers, there are fewer slots this month. If the open mic slots are filled, message grandmashouse.poetry on Instagram to be put on the overflow list. Once the overflow list hits 5 people, I will close the list as to not completely take over next month's list.

COVID restrictions might be lifted across Chicago, but not at Grandma's House! Please adhere to the following rules to keep our community safe.

Reserve your seat. Walk-ins will not be permitted so that we do not exceed capacity.

Wear Your Mask. Masks must be worn properly, even though you are required to be vaccinated. Masks may only be removed while you're performing or actively drinking.

Maintain your distance. Keep six feet of space between each other as much as possible.

Bring proof of vaccination. Please present a photo or hard copy of your vaccination card upon arrival. I HIGHLY recommend that you administer a rapid test before attending the show as well!

Accessibility

The show will be held outside (weather permitting) in a courtyard space accessible from the sidewalk. The bar, restrooms, and alternate indoor performance space are accessible by ramp to the left or a set of two steps straight ahead.

If the ticket price is a barrier to your attendance, please reach out to grandmashouse.poetry on Instagram. No one will be denied for lack of funds. If you would like to cover someone else's ticket price with a donation, please reach out as well.

This month's feature is Rise!

Rise/Nerissa (they/them) is a Black genderfluid, disabled, multidisciplinary artist from St. Louis currently living on Potawatomi territory, present day Chicago. Everything is always changing and that's what they love about themselves, their writing journey, and words in general. Currently, they write from the lens of creating home, embracing rage, simmering love and being deeply committed to their imagination. Imagination as home. Imagination as safety and protection. Imagine to escape for a minute, to cope.. Imagination to believe that the world hella Black and Brown folks have been pushing for is already here, tiny fragments lined in gold, growing a foundation conducive to thriving. Imagination to directly say what needs to be said when the actual story is to hard to tell. When they are not writing, they are being a doula, day dreaming, nerding out about trauma or with their ESA pup, Jelly Ferocious.
