Heritage craft : Leatherworking workshop

Description

One of our contemporary Hi! Street Heroes is Norman Grundy, a Tyldesley entrepreneur who uses leather, sharkskin, and all manner of hides to create luxury bespoke products.

Following in the footsteps of a great number of skilled craftsmen on Elliott Street, Norman can trace his craft back to the various clog makers and leather workers that graced our high street in bygone times - see the attached vintage adverts from the 1860s onwards!

No previous experience necessary for this leatherworking workshop as you will be guided by our expert Norman.

Learn the basics of how hides should be handled and prepared, different tools and techniques involved, and make yourself a beginner’s dog collar & lead that even ‘Shoveltons’ themselves would be proud of!

Our leatherworking workshop is aimed at an adult audience, participants will need to be 18+ and able to safely follow tool instructions. Leatherworking requires a good strength of grip and dexterity to correctly operate the tools , but Norman will be on hand to assist.

Thu 15th Sept - leather belt workshop

Fri 16th Sept - leather dog collar & lead workshop

This event is just one part of Tyldesley Arts & Heritage Festival 2022, organised by For Tyldesley CIC (www.fortyldesley.co.uk) with funding gratefully received from Historic England’s Heritage Action Zone.
