Ice Dyeing with Miriam Speyer

Description

Turnip Green is excited to host local artist Miriam Speyer as she teaches two ice dying sessions!

Similar to tie dye, ice dying uses powdered dye and ice to create vibrant designs full of depth and texture. Ice dye was originally created by quilters when they were looking for a resourceful process to dye their fabrics during winter months. The ice dye process involves covering the garment in ice or snow, then spreading a powdered dye over the ice. Miriam has been perfecting this craft for several years and looks forward to sharing it with the Nashville community. She will be demonstrating the geode technique of tying.

Participants can receive a hand sewn beach poncho (see photos) or bring their own item to dye. Items must be comprised of at least 50% natural fibers to properly absorb dye (i.e. cotton, hemp, linen, silk). If bringing your own item, please arrive 30 minutes early to pre-treat your item)

Miriam Speyer is a multidisciplinary artist who moves effortlessly from one medium to the next. SHe has toured the country (and beyond) as a bass player, and has released several albums of her own original music.

Note: This project will be completed in one session, but must set overnight. Participants must return the next day to pick up their finished, wrapped item and rinse/reveal at home.
