Step back in time and drink beer with the ghosts of Indy’s brewing past at the historic Athenaeum. Your tour takes place in a former German club, once frequented by many of Indy’s most influential citizens. You’ll start with a tour of the building where your guide will give you a brief history of the German influence in Indianapolis, including the story of a pre-Prohibition brewing giant. Afterwards, retire to the Bavarian-inspired beer hall or destination-worthy beer garden at Indy’s oldest restaurant, the Rathskeller, where your guide will lead you through an educational tasting of German beer complimented by a sample platter of traditional German fare.
The Athenaeum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the most ornate and best-preserved building affiliated with the German American community of Indianapolis and includes the Rathskeller, beer hall and beer garden. The award-winning beer garden is a popular fixture in the Mass Ave Cultural District and often hosts live music on weekends. Come for the tour and then stay for the party!
