In the Renaissance, a number of cities shined for the sophisticated culture of their courts. Powerful and illuminated lords ruled these small kingdoms, forging relationships but also competing with one another to seize more power and prestige through political alliances and art patronage. This class explores the art produced within this context by focusing on five of these city-states: Mantova, Ferrara, Urbino, Milan, and Rome.
