Live at DSK: Nonfiction Book Group with Sammi!

Description

Hosted by our neighbors at Die Stammkneipe Brooklyn (710 Fulton St.) and led by Greenlight bookseller Sammi, our nonfiction book group meets monthly to read and discuss the most fascinating topics in nonfiction, both classic and contemporary, with seasonal themes covering a variety of genres. Sammi, leader of our nonfiction book group, writes: “This season will trace the complex origins of the US's racial regimes with a focus on the vitality and vibrancy of the Black freedom struggle. We will read the works of radical academics like Robin DG Kelley, Gerald Horne, and Ruth Wilson Gilmore.” For June, the group reads Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, a New York Times bestseller. As a botanist, Kimmerer was trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on "a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise" (Elizabeth Gilbert). Join us in-person at DSK Brooklyn!
