Description

NOTE: Jason Koo will substitute for Callihan on Oct 7. Class will start at 11 AM instead.

No New York poet has ever spent their lunch hour more famously than Frank O’Hara, who—on his breaks from working at the Museum of Modern Art—penned some of the most memorable poems of the twentieth century. In this weekly drop-in class, we’ll follow O’Hara’s lead and take on the material of the city—poems, paintings, oranges, friendships, and instant coffee with slightly sour cream—to generate new work. We’ll talk about what it means to craft poems on the fly and how crucial it is to listen to the inner voice while observing the outer world. Open to writers of any level. New drafts will be created each session, and sharing will be encouraged but optional. (Note that drop-in classes are not a forum for critique of work; students looking for critique should register for multi-week workshops.)
