Magnificent Souls: Lidian Jackson Emerson and the Transcendentalists

Description

In her 2005 novel, Mr. Emerson’s Wife, Amy Belding Brown explored the life of Lidian Jackson Emerson, the second wife of Ralph Waldo Emerson and mother of all his children. This complex and influential woman was largely overlooked in many biographies of her famous husband, but in her own time she was compared to Margaret Fuller and reputedly matched Emerson himself in insight and intellect. Independent and idealistic, she was an early and ardent abolitionist and an advocate for women's and animal rights.

Brown will share the questions that motivated her research into the fascinating relationships between Lidian, her husband, and those in his circle.

Amy Belding Brown is the author of historical novels, including Emily’s House, Flight of the Sparrow, and Mr. Emerson’s Wife. A New England history enthusiast, Amy was infused at an early age with the region’s outlook and values. She received her BA from Bates College and her MFA from Vermont College. She has taught writing at both Worcester and Fitchburg State Universities. She now lives in rural Vermont with her husband, a spiritual director and retired UCC minister.
