Navigating Your Birth: Interventions
NYB: Interventions is a 2 hour class all about the usage, benefits, risks, and alternatives of common pregnancy, labor, and postpartum medical interventions for you and your birth partner. Customize this class by selecting the interventions that you want to learn about in class together. Following completion of NYB: Interventions, you will receive a copy of the Navigating Your Birth: Interventions Guidebook via PDF ($15 value!) so you have all the information you need to navigate the interventions we did not discuss together.
After you complete NYB: Interventions, you will:
- Know your rights in childbirth and what information you need to make informed decisions about your care
- Understand the use, benefits, risks, and alternatives to several pregnancy and/or childbirth interventions
Choose the 3 topics you most want to learn about when you register:
- 1st/2nd/3rd trimester of pregnancy
- 1st/2nd/3rd stage of labor
- Preterm birth
- Epidurals
- Pain medications
- Induction and augmentation of labor
- Cesarean birth
- Newborn procedures

NYB Classes are scheduled throughout the year, simply select the class date that best fits your schedule and due month. I offer Tiered Pricing for NYB Classes. This pricing is voluntary, requires no paperwork, and in no way influences the education you will receive. Simply choose the rate that is appropriate for your family when you register, no questions asked!
The Bronze price is intended for those who struggle to meet their basic needs, paying full price would present a significant hardship.
The Silver price is intended for those who are able to meet their basic needs, paying full price would be described as a sacrifice, but not a hardship.
The Gold price is the actual cost of the class, if you choose a price below this level you are receiving a discount.
About Your Instructor
Joyce Dykema, MS, CD(DONA), HCHD, CBE is a certified birth doula, Evidence Based Birth® Instructor, childbirth educator, and community breastfeeding educator in Lincoln, Nebraska. Joyce began practice in 2009, and has attended over 140 births. She began teaching childbirth education in 2019 and has instructed more than 100 families. As an Evidence Based Birth® Instructor, Joyce has also provided continuing education courses for birth professionals since 2017. Joyce has partnered with Malone Maternal Wellness as a birth doula and childbirth educator since 2020.

NYB: Labor is all about the stages of labor and advocacy, 3-and-a-half hour class.
NYB: Interventions is all about common medical interventions, 2 hour class.
NYB: Postpartum is all about normal postpartum in the first 12 weeks, 2 hour class.
FAQ:
When during my pregnancy should I take this class: Ideally, you will schedule your childbirth class at the end of your second trimester or early in your third trimester, approximately 23-35 weeks. However, you know your pregnancy, educational needs, and calendar best! Find the right balance of educating yourself early enough in pregnancy to make your preparations for the birth you want, but not so early that you forget what you learned by the time your baby arrives.
I want a complete childbirth series, more than what this class covers: Navigating Your Birth includes classes on Labor, Interventions, and Postpartum, select one, two, or all three for a more comprehensive childbirth education! Can I bring my birth partner and my doula/mom/sister/best friend with me to class: Yes, every pregnant person may bring up to two non-pregnant guests with them to class.
Cancellation Policy: In the event this class is canceled, you will have the option to transfer your registration to a later class or receive a full refund. Refunds will be conducted according to Eventbrite's refund policies.

Refund Policy: Your payment reserves a spot in the class and is non-refundable, but tickets are transferable to different pregnant students and different class sessions with advance approval from Joyce. Transfer from private to group classes and vice versa are allowed pending payment and availability. If you need to transfer your tickets to another family or another class, email me ASAP at joyce@doulajoyce.com
