7:30pm OPEN MIC SHORT NIGHT DECEMBER 2022 - COMPETITION THEME: Holiday & New Year (35mm, 16mm, & digital shorts)

We’re excited to announce our Open Mic Short Nights theme for December 2022 is HOLIDAY & NEW YEAR (based on our series)! You can interpret however you want. Just as long as when we watch your short, we feel you made a good faith effort to do something with the theme.

If you’ve never attended one of our open mic short nights, here’s what they are:

We ask filmmakers to submit their shorts for a roughly 90-105 minute program of short movies with intros by the moviemakers themselves. Then we open up the club for an hour socializing and networking so you filmmakers can get to know each other, form a community, and maybe even work together on your next movies.

Our only rules:

1)Your short must be 10mns or fewer.

2)It can not be intentionally mean to any group of people for purely ideological or tribal reasons. Other than that, we’re not here to gate keep. You can submit anything you like from a 5 minute documentary to a 3 minute music video with content that would get a G rating to content that would get an NC-17 rating. Just as long as it has clear artistic intent and merit.

NON-COMPETITION (SHORTS MADE BEFORE YOU READ THIS): You must submit your short by December 15th at midnight for consideration in that month’s Open Mic Short Night.

COMPETITION (A SHORT MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR TONIGHT): OR. . .if you take up the challenge and make a short film on our theme of the month, you can submit it by by 9am the Friday morning before the events (in this case December 16, 2022). Remember, if you decide to compete in our theme competition, the short must be made between our announcement of the theme and the deadline. It must be under 10mns long and it must follow the guidelines above.

The winner of the Theme of the Month Competition will get their short broadcast to our over 80K+ social media community. Their short will be preceded by an interview with the winning filmmakers along with shout outs to their social media handles. And the winning filmmaking team will get 2 complimentary tickets to two months of our events.

So if you’re ready to create and celebrate cinema, SUBMIT YOUR SHORT to: community@secretmovieclub.com by the deadlines above WITH THE SUBJECT LINE "Open Mic Short Night - December - [Your Short's Title]".

We’ll contact all filmmakers who submit by the December 15th on the 18th. And all filmmakers who submit for the theme competition on Friday, December 16th at 9am by Saturday (the very next day) at 9am.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

REFUNDS:

We can offer refunds up to 24 hours before showtime. Please request a refund through Eventbrite and we will process ASAP. After that, no refunds. Sorry.

However if something last minute comes up and you can’t make the screening, for whatever reason, just write to us before showtime: community@secretmovieclub.com and we’ll offer you complimentary tickets to a future screening, good for 90 days. (Disclaimer: Future screening must have available tickets, cannot be a fundraiser, and must be comparably priced)

HELPFUL SECRET MOVIE CLUB (1917 Bay Street, 2nd Floor, LA, CA 90021) THEATER PARKING TIPS:

We recommend that you park just outside our theater. Remember our theater is actually in a beautiful street art alleyway in the back of the 1917 Bay Street building. You get to our entrance by taking a right on Wilson, then a right behind the building. We are the first set of black steps on the right after the big gate.

There is also a parking lot at the corner of Mateo and Violet Street, just 2 blocks from our theater, which costs $7 per car.
