This tour has a lot going for it with several options. Firstly, if you are looking to get in a metric century ride then move this one to the top of your short list. Here's why - the majority of the route is a rail-to-trail and rural. Quite a bit of it runs alongside scenic Paint Creek. Speaking of Paint Creek - this tour is the whole Paint Creek Trail from end to end. It was formerly known as the Adena Recreational Trail and the Tri-County Triangle Trail. New name - same great trail!
MAKE IT A METRIC CENTURY - OR LESS - ON THIS GORGEOUS TRAIL
Rider's choice! 72, 38, or 34 miles on this beautiful countryside rail-to-trail bikeway.
1 starting spot - 3 tour lengths - 2 CycleNuts tested and approved tasty stops!
This is a CycleNuts Triple LoST which is an acronym for Long or Short Tour - a CycleNuts Tour Group favorite. Because it has three lengths, we call it a Triple LoST.
How LoST Tours work. The 72 mile and 34 mile route goes to and from a CycleNuts tested and approved tasty turnaround spot - Prime Meats & Deli - back to the starting spot. Then, the 34 mile route is done. This segment of the tour is 83% bikeway, mostly level, and in the sun about half of the way. At this point the 72 mile route continues on and the 38 mile route begins. Both of these segments also go to and from a CycleNuts tested and approved tasty turnaround spot - Old Canal Smokehouse - back to the starting spot. This segment of the tour is 92% bikeway, has some opportunities to use your bike's climbing gears, and is in the shade most of the way.
The Paint Creek Recreation Trail is the flagship pathway of a planned trail network in the Ohio counties of Fayette, Ross and Highland. Nearly 35 miles of paved trail are currently open linking the communities of Washington Court House, Frankfort and Chillicothe. The vast majority of the trail occupies a former railroad corridor acquired by the local nonprofit trails group in 1994. However, the trail does leave the original corridor where the right-of-way could not be acquired from its current owners. These diversions are generally brief, with the longest a 2.5-mile on-road segment on the eastern edge of Washington Court House. ~ TrailLink
Along the 38 and 72 mile routes the bikeway passes through the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. Nearly 2000 years ago, American Indians built dozens of monumental mounds and earthen enclosures in southern Ohio. These earthwork complexes were ceremonial landscapes used for feasts, funerals, rituals, and rites of passage associated with an American Indian religious movement that swept over half the continent for almost 400 years. Come walk among the earthworks and experience the past. ~ National Park Service
