Phygital Fashioning with NXS World

Description

NXS#6 Phygital Fashioning explores the representation, consumption and transmission of digital fashion as one of the key mediators of the collective and individual public construction of the Self. How do these new ways of dressing communicate our identity and how we want others to perceive us? What complications do the digitization and democratization of this form of self-expression bring forth? By using digital fashion as a lens, the contributors in this issue contemplate what their findings might say about larger changes within an increasingly global and digital society.

About NXS World

NXS World is a collaborative research project born from the urge to trace the ever-evolving essence of the Self in the digital age. Headquartered in Amsterdam, it is run by core members Monika Grūzīte, Karolien Buurman and Florian Mecklenburg. However, its the ever-growing manifold network of contributors currently ranges up to over three hundred, connected through NXS’ unique method of each individually responding to a preceding submission through a cumulative effect. They are digesting large and often complex concepts of digital culture into tangible bits via written word or visual artworks, all coming together in an annual publication, which is further explored with cross-media platforms and happenings such as immersive exhibitions, performances, lectures and experimental educational content creation formats. NXS World’s starting point for each new project is an observation of certain new societal or technological developments or world events that trigger the urge to be further investigated in relation to their impact on the notion of the Self in the age of digital technology.
