Power + Place // A Conversation with Bryan Lee and HMC Architects

Description

“For people of color in America there is power in the places and spaces our culture is recognized, where our stories are told, where our language is valued, because that is not only good design but that’s justice.” – Bryan C. Lee Jr.

Join the HMC Architects Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Committee on Wednesday, March 9 at 11 a.m. to celebrate the committee’s launch with a special conversation with architect, writer, educator, and design justice advocate Bryan C. Lee Jr.

As the founder and design principal of Colloqate, a nonprofit multidisciplinary design practice in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lee is dedicated to expanding community access to design and creating racial, social, and culture equity spaces. In his presentation, he will explore how design justice, race, culture and architecture are inherently connected and how architects and designers can dismantle the privilege and power structures that actively create systems of injustice within the built environment.

At HMC, we believe that when our teams reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, we can design a better, more equitable future for all. In the summer of 2020, HMC organized a new DE&I committee to keep this a top priority within our firm. The advisory committee identifies opportunities to promote greater diversity and inclusion at HMC—laying the groundwork for productive conversations. Our journey to achieving our DEI goals will take time, but we’re proud of the progress we’re making.

This is a virtual event. After you register, we will email the Microsoft Teams link no later than March 8.
