ABSTRACT: Applications for 3D laser scanning and drones in the mining industry are still in infancy, as capabilities are developing rapidly in terms of scale, speed, and scope of services. 3D laser scanning (LIDAR) is one of the most precise ways to capture 3D dimensional information, shape, and color of existing structures. When this technology is combined with a drone (UAS, UAV) efficiency of collecting the same amount of data increases significantly compared to terrestrial laser scanning. Aerial laser scanning combined with the drones that can collect 3D point cloud, still images, and videos can be used to construct digital 3-dimensional models, assess condition of the existing structures, and perform inspections.

This talk will showcase interior and exterior aerial laser scanning of a 600-ft long by 80-ft wide by 75-ft tall live storage coal barn for assessment and structural inspection of the steel superstructure using a drone. This talk will explore other potential applications that can be used for mining industry including:

Safe data collection / 3D laser scanning of cavities using drones and LIDAR for underground applications, b) 3D mapping of the mine environment, c) Tailings stability monitoring, d) Structural inspections for above ground and underground structures, e) Reserve detection, verifications, volumetric calculations, f) Monitoring movement, deformation, subsidence.

BIOGRAPHY: Mustafa has over two decades of experience in the areas of structural analysis and design; structural evaluation, renovation, and assessment of existing facilities; foundation design; building code review; project and construction management; and cost estimating for a range of project types that have involved the mining, heavy industrial, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, and food and beverage industries. He has executed, coordinated, and managed projects from feasibility studies to construction support services. Mustafa’s capabilities include scheduling, budgeting, contract document and specification preparation, technical review, construction review, and project stakeholder coordination. He is a certified Cal OES Safety Assessment Program (SAP) Evaluator and has performed structural condition assessments for various types of structures and buildings.
