Stavich Bike Trail Smart-guided Cycle Tour Youngstown, OH/ New Castle, PA

Description

Experience the Stavich Bike Trail - Ohio/Pennsylvania

CycleNuts Selfie Cycling Tours

Some trails you just have to experience because they are there. The Stavich Bike Trail straddling the Ohio/Pennsylvania border is one such trail. It is unique in that it is one of the few bikeways in America that crosses state borders but keeps its name from end to end. It is also unique in that it is a rail-to-trail bikeway, but not on a train rail. Instead, it is built on a former electric trolley car rail. It is historical as "an early example for rail-trails and is still somewhat uncommon, as it connects two states" and "was one of 23 National Recreation Trails designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 2003, celebrating “Healthy Trails, Healthy People.” The scenery is that of small town Americana as the bikeway passes through small towns and wooded hilly countryside, running most of the way nearby a working railroad. At times the Stavich Bike Trail rises above the railway, and other times below, as it follows the railbed of the former Penn-Ohio Electric System with electric trolley cars that took the hilly terrain with ease.

This 20 mile smart-guided route is 92% bikeway and comes with CycleNuts' 50% downhill guarantee. The bikeway is a dedicated paved trail except for a short segment sharing the road through a small town. It is a rail-to-trail bikeway, but the former railbed was that of an electric trolley service following the rolling topography of the land. All bikes may not be appropriate for this smart-guided tour - the trail surface is reportedly rough on skinny tires (I experienced no trouble with my loaded touring bike) and the hilly topography might make a hard ride for a single speed bike.
