8pm SUMMERTIME (2020, dir by Carlos Lopez Estrada, written by Dave Harris, story by the Summertime Poets, digital presentation)

SPECIAL NOTES: We're excited to continue our monthly partnership with the GuadaLAjara Film Festival (GLAFF.ORG, @glafilmfest) where we present a Latinx BIPOC centered movie, promote cross-cultural filmmaking community, have exciting speakers from the LatinX filmmaking community, and just have an all around great time.

Tonight, the theater will be arrayed in a club-like atmosphere as we eat, drink, watch the movie, and have a live spoken word and poetry slam night with poets from the local GETLIT (@getlitpoet) organization.

We try to make each event a blast often with beer, drinks, music, dancing, and more. Help us grow our Pan-American filmmaking community!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

***As of April 1, 2022, masks are now optional for indoor theater events if you're fully vaccinated. Anyone without proof of vaccination will be required to wear a mask for their own safety. We will continue to update our protocols with the dynamic situation. We are working to make sure we make the theater going experience the most enjoyable and safest possible.

HOW TO:

1)PLEASE BRING YOUR VACCINATION CARD (digital cards accepted).

2)PLEASE BE AWARE THAT ANYONE EXHIBITING COVID OR FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS AT THE DOOR, WILL BE OFFERED COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS TO A FUTURE SHOW AND ASKED TO RETURN WHEN HEALTHY. So please, if you’re feeling sick, just write us at community@secretmovieclub.com and we’ll offer you complimentary tickets to a future screening when you’re healthy. (Disclaimer under “REFUNDS” applies)

Tonight, we're honored to continue our partnership with the Guadalajara Film Festival as we present the 2020 Sundance Film Festival-debuting homegrown Los Angeles spoken word/poetry slam musical spectacular Summertime.

Summertime follows the intersecting stories of 27 youth spoken word poets over a single day in Los Angeles. The film was inspired by a poetry showcase where teen performers from across LA recited personal texts about themselves, their communities, and their relationship to their city.

The project was then developed around the artists' individual poems and interwoven into a larger, unified, moving narrative experiment — part contemporary musical and part sociological art. Summertime explores themes of identity, community, and intersectionality through the unique perspectives of this diverse ensemble.

Directed by Carlos López Estrada (Raya and the Last Dragon), written by Dave Harris and developed by 27 local Los Angeles high school poets (collectively known as the Summertime Poets), Summertime is exactly the kind of creative blast from the next generation of voices we want and need to celebrate.

We're also doing things a little differently tonight by turning the Secret Movie Club Theater into a kind of club complete with tables, chairs so everyone can eat, drink, watch the movie, hear the poetry, and just have a great night of community.

Join us tonight for the movie, live poetry, and the chance to yet again connect with filmmakers and film lovers from both Mexico and the United States (and beyond)!

Best always,

Craig Hammill
