Super Spectacular Comedy Show to Support Afghan Refugees

Description

Grassroots Comedy DC is back with a live outdoor comedy show to support Solutions in Hometown Connections in its efforts to assist Afghan refugees as they transition to life in the United States!

Moving. It’s hard enough to leave the couch these days, let alone your house. But what if you were forced to leave your country and uproot your entire life without warning? And what if you had to adjust to a new home that is radically different from everything you’ve ever known? Now you need to come up with your Starbucks name - an entirely different name just to get a coffee. You see dogs wearing hand-knitted sweaters and eating organic grass-fed beef while homeless humans fill the streets. And everywhere you look, there is something called the milk crate challenge where people are breaking their own necks for social media without anyone forcing them to.

But with tens of thousands of displaced Afghans working to make the US their new home, the Afghan refugee crisis is no laughing matter. Grassroots Comedy DC has seen enough, and is proud to present the Super Spectacular Comedy Show to Support Afghan Refugees, with a portion of the proceeds going to Solutions in Hometown Connections.

Solutions in Hometown Connections (SHC) supports refugee immigrants in MD, VA, and DC in the transition to a new life in the US. Over the next few weeks, upwards of 2,500 Afghans will begin arriving in the US every day. A good number will be resettled in the DMV area, where they will begin to rebuild their lives. Many will join SHC programs, which include assistance with English language, school homework, employment coaching, and the citizenship and naturalization processes. With so many newcomers on the way, there is a dire need to increase program capacity right away. You can help.

As if that’s not enough, we have a super spectacular lineup of comedians who know a thing or two about the immigrant experience, including Yasmin Elhady (Kennedy Center), Naomi Karavani (Redacted Tonight), Jaffer Khan (Redacted Tonight), Sofia Javed (Lady Laughs Comedy Festival), Martin Amini (TruTV), and Grassroots Comedy DC's own Chris Blackwood. Hosted by Christian Escoto (DC Improv).

So grab a friend or five and join us for a night of laughter in support of a good cause!
