'The Art of Reflections at New York's Fine Arts Museums' Webinar

Description

While cell phones have turned the art of portraying into an obsession, the idea of capturing a person’s likeness and using compelling perspective, including reflections, has a long tradition in art. The mirror in particular has always been of great interest to artists, visually and symbolically, especially with photographers who've embraced the theme in a fresh manner. It's time to explore the theme of reflection throughout some of New York's most coveted art institutions.

Join New York Adventure Club as we take a deep dive into the art of reflections, one of art history’s most persistent themes that showcases a variety of styles and explores questions in the topics of identity, vanity, and memory.

Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this virtual journey to major art collections around New York City will include:

  • An overview of reflections as a theme in the fine arts and why artists embark on this unusual style
  • A selection of artworks from the MET, including Petrus Christus’ Goldsmith in his Shop and George de la Tour’s The Penitent
  • A look at pieces at the Frick Collection, such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ Comptesse d’Haussonville
  • An exploration of masterworks at the Guggenheim Museum like Manet’s Before the Mirror
  • Picasso’s Girl Before a Mirror, Frida Kahlo, Nan Goldin, and Cindy Sherman at MoMA

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about the art of reflections are welcomed and encouraged!
