Truth and Equity: Washington, DC — a new initiative of the Center for Community Resilience (CCR) in the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University — aims to: 1) raise awareness about and dismantle the processes and systems that generate racial harm; 2) facilitate reconciliation through racial healing, and 3) strengthen collective will for reconstructing systems to facilitate more equitable policy and practice. The initiative is supported with funding from the GWU Equity Institute Initiative.

To kick off the work, CCR is hosting a documentary screening and panel discussion on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 (5:00-8:00pm ET) at Jack Morton Auditorium. We will begin with the screening of a CCR-produced documentary that explores how structural racism harmed four Black communities in Cincinnati and offers a vision for systems transformation and policy change in support of racial equity. Immediately following, a panel of cross-disciplinary experts will engage in a discussion on the impacts of structural racism in Washington, DC, and the need for cross-sector, community-centered, systems-level approaches to repairing trauma, fostering equity, and building resilience. The event is co-sponsored by the GWU Equity Institute Initiative and the Milken Institute School of Public Health.

Panelists include: Roy L. Austin, Jr., JD, Vice President of Civil Rights & Deputy General Counsel, Meta; Jehan "Gigi" El-Bayoumi, MD, FACP, Founding Director, Rodham Institute; Calvin Smith, Sr. Director of Government Relations at BridgePoint Healthcare & Former Chair, Ward 8 Health Council; Erin Saul, Community Engagement Director, Joining Forces for Children; and Renee McPhatter, JD, Assistant Vice President for Government and Community Relations, George Washington University.
