In line with The Everyone Economy Report, we found that despite, on the surface, many organisations and staff embracing EDI initiatives, the UK has systemic challenges around workplace inclusion, with specific challenges for minoritised groups who feel overlooked and face discrimination. This feedback informed us that managers and leaders need to have an EDI lens when considering all their actions and behaviours. Similarly, managers and leaders need to be held to account for making inclusivity and equality of opportunity happen, embedding fairness, consistency and challenging biases.

We will be discussing the benefits of adopting blind recruitment processes in organisations. We shall be exploring the presence of unconscious bias in the recruitment process and touching on a variety of ways to minimise its presence in every size of organisation.

Azmat Mohammed

Director General, The British Institute of Recruiters

Azmat Mohammed is the BIOR’s Founder and holds the position of director-general at the BIOR.  His challenging role involves working with companies in the changing face of recruitment and HR. This involves ensuring their offer to members and strategy are aligned to their business goals. He also creates exciting new partnerships for the BIOR (national and international), supporting the team that creates and manages the BIOR’s sector leading technology, online strategy, online platforms, online infrastructure, as well as working with his team to create a service offering that is ‘best in class’.  He also has the task of ensuring the BIOR has all the required internal technology, as well as internal skills & expertise in its teams to meet the BIOR's exacting operational mission, vision and values.  Azmat is able to create something exciting, new and innovative from the ground up, with a real 'can do' attitude and years of expertise and knowledge as a motivator and leader.

Kirsty Watson CMgr FCMI

Regional Stakeholder Lead, CMI North East Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Board

Kirsty has an MBA, a BA & BSc (Hons) in Interactive Multimedia from the University of Huddersfield and Social Psychology plus Philosophy from the Open University. A Charted Manager of the CMI, Kirsty is currently completing a PhD in Business and Management. With a focus on latent and necessity entrepreneurial skills within individuals in marginalised communities.

Kirsty has run her own multimedia and digital agency since 2008. She is also the founder and managing director of an apprenticeship training provider. Delivering Digital Marketing apprenticeships and training across the UK, since 2014.

Her passion lies in giving back to her community. As well as her core business, she makes time to deliver a community-focused service that supports confidence-building, delivers career advice, and mentors individuals from marginalised groups to set up and run their own business. Throughout this, she focuses on generating local employment opportunities, promoting economic growth, and facilitating social inclusion. She is also a BAME ambassador at the University of Huddersfield.
