Understanding Learner Variability within Culturally Responsive Practices

Description

Creating a culturally responsive classroom requires teachers to understand the whole child and how a students’ culture and background can shape their cognitive and social emotional experiences in academic settings. In this session, we will do a deep dive into learner factors like Sense of Belonging, Motivation, and Stereotype Threat to understand the impact the learning environment can have on students. We’ll also examine research-based strategies that support students who have been historically marginalized and discuss what it takes for educators to implement these practices successfully. Participants will have an opportunity to explore the free resources within the Learner Variability Navigator, including our workspaces that showcase how educators address learner variability in their classroom and topic pages, which highlight resources and research on key topics related to learner variability. Participants will also practice using protocols and reflection questions from our Culturally Responsive Practice field guide created by teachers for teachers.
