About Warhol and The West

Andy Warhol was influenced and inspired by the mythic aspects of the West. His first exposure came from toys, books, film, and television; and later was confirmed in his clothing, collecting, and travel. He also developed a lifelong passion for Native American art, jewelry, weavings, and artifacts. While Warhol’s best-known Western works are the images in the Cowboys and Indians suite of 1986, it did not mark the artist’s first exploration of Western subjects. His portraits of Western movie stars Elvis Presley, Dennis Hopper, and Clint Eastwood along with those of contemporary Native American luminaries Russell Means, Fritz Scholder, and R.C. Gorman all predate Cowboys and Indians. Since the artist’s untimely death in 1987, scores of books have been written about various aspects of Warhol’s life, artwork, and legacy. Few of these volumes event mention Cowboys and Indians, or any of his other Western subjects. This exhibition is the first to place a spotlight on the significant body of Western art produced by Warhol over the course of his lifetime and provide context for understanding these images within his career and their important within contemporary Western art.
