Wearing Medieval and Renaissance Jewelry at NYC Jewelry Week

Our exhibition explores jewelry as keepsakes, as manifestations of love and as art. Love, appreciation, joy, these are all inherently part of the human experience, and jewelry incorporates these feelings. Objects of personal adornment represent a signal part of material culture throughout history, and perhaps the most personally significant part of personal expression. In the 14th century, the Duchess of Gloucester bequeathed a reliquary jewel to her son. In her will she calls it ‘thing of mine I have loved the best’. Historic jewelry has the added dimension of touch. In this sense historic jewelry is almost unlike any other type of historical artwork currently on the market, in that it offers a unique, physical connection with the past. Very few objects of material culture can transport us back in time in quite the same way, offering us a glimpse of what life would have been like back then.
