What about consonants? Prioritizing feedback for comprehensibility

Description

Workshop Description

English has 24 distinct consonant sounds. It's easy to think that we should teach each one of them, but who has the time? And what if you discovered that some consonants matter more than others? In this workshop, participants will explore consonants in the context of functional load, L1 phonotactic constraints, and effective strategies for helping learners with tricky consonants.

This Level 2 workshop is open to Level 1 certified teachers and is recommended to those who have completed all three Level 2 Core workshops.

Workshop Schedule

This course meets on Wednesdays from 1-2:30 pm ET (New York time) online with the following weekly themes:

  • April 6: What are consonants? Which ones are most important?
  • April 13: How consonants intersect and interact with vowels
  • April 21: Phonotactics: What you need to know your students' L1's
  • April 28: Case studies, curiosities, and conclusions

All sessions occur online through Zoom, are recorded, and are posted in a private YouTube playlist for those who have to miss part or all of a session. The workshop is designed for live interaction but can be taken asynchronously with permission from Color Vowel. Contact us at customersupport@colorvowel.com if you have questions.
