Bios are Fun, Right? Who Doesn’t Like Talking About Themselves in the Third Person?

If the request to write a short third-person bio sends you into chills and the fridge for a comfort food snack, you are in the comfort-seeking club of those who have yet to discover the fun of writing a cheeky, yet complete bio.

Yes, there are times for serious bios with all your accolades, awards and achievements.

This may be one of them when writing your bio to charm prospects, speaking gigs and clients. Depending on your strategic goals, you might want to stray from the time-old format and spice it up a little.

Do you get all nervous and shaky when faced with introducing yourself to a potential client, let alone a crowd? Whether you are a speaker, coach, or musician, we all market something and quite often ourselves. Our bio, our personal mission is the time to shine. Let it do the heavy lifting of introductions. Banish success anorexia or any ego-driven fears about presenting yourself in the best possible light. TIP: Using humour to jazz up a bio can really help.

If any of you are speakers or need to present content to one or many, you know that first chuckle, smile or audience engagement moment sets you at ease. Consider a bio somewhat similar.

How quickly can you engage your prospect with who you are?

How much do you reveal, what does your audience want to know and why?

What do you need them to know?

How can you evoke an emotion? (People will forget what you do or say but will remember how you make them feel.)

When you truly know yourself and can put it on the page in 50 words or less, you will feel a bit like climbers reaching the top of Everest.

There will be times when you can see yourself as awesome, smart and a gift to the world. These are the times to write your bio. There are days you are a champion of the cereal bowls finding random cheerios on the floor before you step on them with clean stockings.

If you are not sure about your present bio, unsure how to do one, want to benefit from the synergy from workshopping it or If your bio simply needs an update, tidying, revamping for a different audience or new passion, then please join me in my workshop where you'll learn:

tips on choosing pertinent details

ways to edit it down to the assigned word count and still say what is needed

how to share about yourself without sounding like you are boasting

ways to sell yourself without selling

look at stellar bios and crappy bios for comparison

And yes, do your new bio all within a limited word count!

So I put my thinking writer hat on and took a good long pull on my emergency oxygen mask to construct a formula for your wonderful bio. It is easy to pluck words out of your toolbox and string them together in a few 10-Xed sentences.

First, let’s take a moment of gratitude for the free advertising space when you are asked for a bio. Remember since the first-ever stone tablet was etched, bios have been around and are a vital way for you to rise above the crowd.

Why are bios important: First impressions happen only once. Your bio appears for you in your absence. Good bios establish your credentials and lead to more contacts and potential (repeat) clients.

Free advertising: Your bio is going to be seen by many.

Transfer: When your words resonate with a potential audience, they will look for more of you and spread the word to others.

Sign up and bring your tired and worn-out bios. We will revamp them. There will be a ‘door’ prize from attendees’ names pulled out of a hat to win a bio and mission writing session with Rusti. All attendees, upon registration, will receive a bio-writing worksheet. Attend with a friend (they will speak easily of your attributes) and if this is not possible, then have a friend or ecstatic client help you fill out the worksheet. Filling out the worksheet ahead of time will be extremely helpful.
